MAY 6, 1863:
The
Battle of Chancellorsville (Day Seven):
Rising waters of the Rappahannock
threaten to cut off the Union retreat. Hooker’s immediate subordinate, Major
General Darius M. Couch, attempted to turn his force and fight, but was
overruled by Hooker. At the same time, Lee began an artillery barrage of what
had been the Union positions, but called it off when advised that the Union
army had retreated.
