JUNE 23, 1863:
The
Tullahoma Campaign (The Middle Tennessee Campaign) begins.
A series of
engagements fought between June 24 and July 3, 1863, involving the Union Army
of the Cumberland and the Confederate Army of Tennessee, in which the Yankees
outmaneuvered the Rebels from a strong defensive position, driving the Confederates
from Middle Tennessee and threatening the area around Chattanooga.
The
Tullahoma Campaign is described by historians as a "brilliant"
campaign that achieved very significant goals with very few casualties on
either side. However, it was overshadowed by contemporaneous Union victories at
Gettysburg and Vicksburg, and is forgotten. Too, it left the Army of Tennessee
essentially intact, which led to the Union’s disastrous defeat at the Battle of
Chickamauga in September.
