September 17, 1863---More skirmishes near Lookout Mountain

SEPTEMBER 17, 1863:

On the first anniversary of the Battle of Antietam, General Braxton Bragg C.S.A. finds himself with an opportunity to attack the scattered Union forces that are strung out in a fifty mile radius around Chickamauga Creek, their intended destination. Having missed the selfsame chance at McLemore’s Cove on the eleventh of September, Bragg misreads the situation again, launching a weak demonstration against the Union right flank which gathers itself and strikes back. Neither side commits itself to the battle, and the skirmishes along the line peter out ineffectually.
