JUNE 19, 1863:
The
Battle of Middleburg, Virginia.
In a follow-up to the Battle of Aldie, Union
forces attack J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry, which has occupied the high ground.
Skirmishing following the Battle of Aldie has already cost the Union some 300
men, and this difficult attack on a mountain ridge in 98-degree weather saps
both sides. Losses this day were 100 on the Union side, from all causes, and
about 40 on the Confederate side from all causes. Though Stuart withdrew from
the battle first, he retained the better position.
