JUNE 26, 1863:
The
Battle of Hoover’s Gap, Tennessee. Armed with new Spencer repeating carbines,
Union forces push Confederate troops back to Tullahoma. After a series of successful
Union raids in the area, the Confederates begin to fall back even further, to
Chattanooga.
On this day as well, as part of the prelude to Gettysburg, General Jubal Early C.S.A. and 5,000 of his men camp
overnight in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on their way to York, and then on to
Harrisburg.
