August 31, 1861---Convoy cruises to crush Confederates



AUGUST 31, 1861:     

General Fremont departs St. Louis by river with 8000 troops. His destination is Bird’s Point. His intention is to crush Confederate resistance downriver. Today’s expedition will result in the Battle of Charleston, Missouri.


August 30, 1861---The Pathfinder Emancipates Missouri's slaves---without orders



AUGUST 30, 1861:    

General John C. Fremont issues a proclamation declaring martial law throughout all of Missouri and ordering that the slaves of rebels be freed. He does so without orders.


August 29, 1861---Fort Hatteras falls



AUGUST 29, 1861:     

C.S.A. forces at Fort Hatteras surrender. The Confederates lose one of their few major deep water ports.


August 28, 1861---Fremont wants to free Missouri



AUGUST 28, 1861:   

“The Pathfinder” General John C. Fremont U.S.A. orders General Ulysses S. Grant to Cape Girardeau, as part of a movement to clear rebel forces from Southeast Missouri.


August 27, 1861---Cape Hatteras captured



AUGUST 27, 1861:     

The capture of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Eight Union warships and 800 troops launch an amphibious landing against Fort Clark and Fort Hatteras, on the Hatteras Inlet. A sustained naval bombardment by Union ships destroys the forts.


August 26, 1861---King to Confederacy: I say, 'Aloha to all Americans!'



AUGUST 26, 1861:    

King Kamehameha IV of the Kingdom of Hawaii announced that his nation would remain neutral in the Civil War. He permitted Confederate-flagged ships to dock in the vital Pacific port.
