JUNE 25, 1863:
The
Siege of Vicksburg (Day Thirty Eight):
Union
forces attempt to blow a hole in the Vicksburg entrenchments using a giant
tunnel mine designed by a civil engineer, Brevet Brigadier General Andrew J.
Hickenlooper. Although Hickenlooper’s mine explodes impressively, the
Confederates beat back the Union advance with little difficulty.
