MAY 19, 1863:
The Siege of Vicksburg (Day Two):
Union Brigadier U.S. Grant orders his subordinate, General William
Tecumseh Sherman to launch a full frontal assault on Vicksburg. Grant soon discovers
that the Confederates inside the city are not demoralized after their string of
defeats at Raymond, Champion Hill, Jackson and Big Black. The Union assault is
repulsed with losses of over 1,000, suffered particularly at the impressive
Confederate-built earthwork known as Stockade Redan.
