MAY 10, 1863:
Stonewall
Jackson dies of pneumonia contracted secondarily to the wounds he received at
Chancellorsville. (Despite the picture, he died in a house, not in a tent, and
in the presence of his wife who’d been called to his side.) With his death, the
South lost one of its most able and aggressive commanders. His last words:
"Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees."
