June 14, 1863---The Second Battle of Winchester, Virginia: Day Two

JUNE 14, 1863:

The Second Battle of Winchester, Virginia (Day Two):

The Confederates flank Fort Milroy, the main Union fortification, and establish themselves on Bower’s Hill and beyond the crest of Apple Pie Ridge, where Union observers could not see them. After a daylong bombardment of the fort from Bower’s Hill, the cannon on Apple Pie Ridge opened up in the early evening. After 45 minutes of fire, the Union defenders of Fort Milroy were overwhelmed by an infantry charge that swept up the face of the fort and overwhelmed their positions. However, the guns of the fort traded blows with the batteries on Bower’s Hill and Apple Pie Ridge far into the night.
