MAY 20, 1863:
The Battle of Cheneyville, Louisiana. A
minor but very bloody engagement in the center of the State pits Confederate
Louisianan cavalry against Union Louisianan cavalry in what one officer describes
as a “Carnival of Death.” The battle rages back and forth all day, with no
clear advantage, though the Union troops escape an ambush and withdraw in
order. Both sides call it a victory, though both are badly mauled. Casualties
are high, but no numbers survive.
