September 7, 1864---"War is war"



SEPTEMBER 7, 1864:       

The last civilians leave Atlanta. Sherman announces, “If the people raise a howl against my barbarity and cruelty, I will answer that war is war and not popularity-seeking.” 


September 6, 1864---New Recruits



SEPTEMBER 6, 1864:       

Raiders from Confederate-held Arkansas enter Norristown Missouri on a “recruitment drive.”  All pro-Confederate Missourians have long since gone South, and Union garrison troops chase the raiders back into Arkansas without spilling a drop of blood. Elsewhere, the war experiences one of its rare quiet days.
