MAY 31, 1863:
The
Provost Marshal of St. Louis reports on 125 inmates held in College
Prison---two are Jayhawkers, five are Bushwhackers, three are thieves, eight
are Confederate deserters, one is a Federal deserter, two have been
Court-Martialed, two refused to join the army, 50 are Prisoners of War,
eighteen violated their loyalty oaths to the United States, one violated his
(battle) “Parole of Honor”, three are “supposed” spies, one is a “guerrilla”
and another one is a “secessionist,” while yet another is a “notorious rebel;”
one is a “conscript,” one “surrendered himself,” and one was “found in the
brush.” Of the rest, most have no listed charges.
