June 28, 1863---Jubal Early raids York PA

JUNE 28, 1863:

Prelude to Gettysburg:

Confederate General Jubal Early (“Old Jubilee”) and his Division (Stonewall Jackson’s former command) enter York, Pennsylvania, and begin to garrison the town, but marching orders from Robert E. Lee change Early’s plans, and he orders a forced requisition of the townsfolk for money and food. Town officials began door-to-door collection of cash, while leading merchants “donated” large quantities of flour, beef, and other foodstuffs. Early was like his superior, Ewell---an early anti-secessionist. Both men were charmingly profane, though Early completely lacked Ewell’s wit.
