JUNE 7, 1863:
The
Battle of Milliken’s Bend, Louisiana.
In an attempt to relieve the Siege of
Vicksburg, Confederate troops attack the Union supply dump and staging area at
Milliken’s Bend on the Mississippi River. Despite very heavy casualties, the
Union forces (primarily of the United States Colored Troops) drove off the
attackers, who were never able to reach the Union base. The U.S.C.T. suffered
652 casualties while the Confederates suffered 185.
