February 9, 1864---The Custers' Wedding Day

FEBRUARY 9, 1864:

Brigadier General George Custer U.S.A. marries Elizabeth “Libbie” Bacon in Monroe, Michigan. Custer was the youngest General in the Union Army, having earned his stars in 1863 at age 23. The vivacious and pretty Libbie became her husband’s strongest professional advocate. It was in part due to her persuasive and pleasant personality that Custer was eventually promoted to Major General and was posted to the postbellum frontier as Commander of the Seventh Cavalry.
