FEBRUARY 7, 1864:
The
Battle of Morton’s Ford, Virginia. By way of a feint, in order to distract from
a planned raid on Richmond, units of the Army of The Potomac forced their way
across the Rapidan River, facing stiff resistance from units of the Army of
Northern Virginia. After heavy fighting, the Union troops withdrew. The planned
raid on Richmond was meanwhile cancelled, as it was discovered that an informer
had disclosed the Union battle plan to Confederate officers.
