JUNE 21, 1863:
The
Battle of Upperville, Virginia.
Determined to break Jeb Stuart’s cavalry, Union
forces engage in this follow-up to the Battle of Aldie and the Battle of
Middleburg. Although his men were tired from having fought two previous battles
within the past five days plus constant skirmishing, Stuart was able to defend
his position along Goose Creek and make a tactical retreat through Upperville to
Ashby’s Gap. The fighting was furious. He succeeded in his strategic goal of
diverting the enemy from gaining intelligence on Robert E. Lee’s movements; at
that very time, Lee’s army was crossing into Union territory. However, Stuart
made a serious blunder when he chose to make a circuit of the Union Army rather
than link up with Lee directly. This choice was to have a profound impact on
the Confederacy.
