June 2, 1863---The Raid at Combahee Ferry



JUNE 2, 1863:   

The Raid at Combahee Ferry, South Carolina. A Union raid, planned and led by Harriet Tubman who had been born in bondage but liberated herself, frees 750 slaves. Most of the freedmen joined the Union Army. Tubman, who held no military rank, is credited as the first black and the first woman to command a U.S. Army expedition.
