JANUARY 9, 1863:
The
Battle of Arkansas Post (The Battle of Fort Hindman). Union forces under
William Tecumseh Sherman numbering 33,000 attack Fort Hindman, an earthen fort,
on the Arkansas River in preparation for their assault on Little Rock. All day, and into the next, Union gunboats
shelled the fort, which began to come apart, while ground troops surrounded the
structure. Faced with certain defeat, the Confederate force of 5,000 men
surrendered on January 11th.
