February 17, 1863---The Yazoo River Delta Campaign



FEBRUARY 17, 1863:          

In a bid to gain access to the back door of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Union forces have cut a break in the levee between the Mississippi River and the Yazoo River Delta. The area is a tangled maze of rivers and bayous. The breaking of the levee raises the waterline from soggy land to fifteen feet.
