February 4, 1863---The Battle of Batesville, Arkansas

FEBRUARY 4, 1863:

The Battle of Batesville, Arkansas.

As part of the Union’s movement toward Little Rock, the Union occupies Batesville and settles into its cozy homes for the night. The Confederate forces bivouac in the snow and cold. Although the Union troops in Batesville are outnumbered by the Confederates trying to challenge them, the Union commander, Colonel George Waring, has ordered his men to build numerous campfires in an open field, fooling the Confederates into thinking there is a much larger force at hand. Union pickets also capture a number of Confederates after some desultory firing. As dawn breaks on the 5th, the Union force moves out quickly toward Evening Shade, Arkansas, leaving the bewildered, numb Confederate force behind.
