JANUARY 7, 1863:
After
his victories at Cane Hill and Prairie Grove, Arkansas, Brigadier General James
Blunt is sacked and arrested on orders of his superior, Major General John
Schofield. The charge: “Attacking the enemy without orders.” Blunt is shortly
after restored to command.
Schofield, who eventually becomes Commanding General
of the U.S. Army, and then Secretary of War, is suspected by some at the time
of having Southern sympathies. Schofield later recommends himself for, and
receives, the Congressional Medal of Honor for his Civil War service.
