JANUARY 21, 1863:
The
Mud March continues---and so do the rains. Wagons and caissons are bogged down,
men are mired in muck, and the Army of The Potomac moves only a mile and a half
in one day. Confederate pickets, emboldened by the floundering of the Union
army, yell insults and taunts at the struggling men, and hold up offensive
signs.
