FEBRUARY 1, 1863:
General John McClernand, having been
demoted to command of only a single Corps by General Ulysses S. Grant, protests
in high dudgeon to the War Department and the President. Going through proper
channels, he submits his communications to Grant, who passes them along with
his own letter: "But
whether I do General McClernand injustice or not, I have not confidence in his
ability as a soldier to conduct an expedition of the magnitude of this one
successfully." McClernand, a
political General, asks the President a simple question: “[W]hether Genl. Grant or myself will have
immediate command of the Miss. River Expedition [?]"
