January 31, 1863---The "breaking" of the blockade

JANUARY 31, 1863:

The Confederate ironclad rams, C.S.S. PALMETTO STATE and the C.S.S. CHICORA attack the Union vessels blockading Charleston, South Carolina. After disabling two Union ships and causing the others to temporarily withdraw, the two Confederate vessels enter Charleston Harbor unmolested. The Southern Press exults that “The Blockade Is Broken!” ignoring the fact that of all the thousand miles of Confederate coastline, only Charleston was opened, and only for an afternoon; the next day, the United States Navy had returned in force.
