January 28, 1863---The Great Snowball Battle of The Rappahannock River

JANUARY 28, 1863:

The Great Snowball Battle of The Rappahannock River.

A blizzard blankets Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia with two feet of snow. Snowed in along the banks of the Rappahannock River, bored Confederates of the First and Fourth Texas Infantry launch a major snowball offensive against their comrades in the Fifth Texas Infantry, who join them in a snow assault on the Third Arkansas Infantry, which joins forces with the victors. This combined expeditionary force attacks the Georgia Brigade who join their conquerors and attack yet another division. Eventually, 9,000 troops are engaged in the snowball battle. After some hours of this playfulness, General James Longstreet reportedly banned any future snowball fights.
