February 20, 1863---Grant bans booze

FEBRUARY 20, 1863:

Belying his reputation as an indulger, General Grant issues an order requiring all bars in his department to be closed, and no spiritous, vinuous or malt liquors to be allowed to be sold in the army’s camps.  Card playing and gaming is also strictly prohibited.
