February 3, 1863---The Second Battle of Fort Donelson

FEBRUARY 3, 1863:

The Second Battle of Fort Donelson (The Battle of Dover, Tennessee).

The Second Battle of Fort Donelson came about when the Confederacy attempted to block Union shipping on the Cumberland River. In response, the Union simply bypassed the less-important Cumberland, leaving the Confederate garrison cooling its heels. Frustrated, the Confederate commander decided to attack the Union garrison at Dover, Tennessee, which turned out to be far more well-entrenched than he had been informed. After an exchange of fire, the 2,500 Confederates were driven off by the 800 Federals with heavy losses. The Confederates abandoned northern Middle Tennessee after this battle.
