February 19, 1863---The Chunky Creek Disaster

FEBRUARY 19, 1863:

A massive train wreck occurs when the bridge over Chunky Creek, near Hickory, Mississippi, collapses under the weight of the train because of subsidence due to flooding. Millions of dollars in military equipment and food are lost and 40 C.S.A. soldiers are killed. Others are rescued by members of the First Choctaw Battalion who dive into the raging creek to save lives.
