January 10, 1863---The loss of the U.S.S. HATTERAS

JANUARY 10, 1863:

The United States Navy bombards Galveston, Texas, which had passed from Rebel hands into Union hands in October and back into Rebel hands in January. The C.S.S. ALABAMA, which has been raiding throughout the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico attacks the U.S.S. HATTERAS and sinks her in her first warship action. It is one of the few battles in which a sailing ship bests a steamer. The HATTERAS sinks upright in shallow water, and when the wreck is spotted the next day, her colors are still flying from the top of her mast which is poking above the waves.
