FEBRUARY 5, 1863:
Facing
enforced inactivity due to the persistent cold and snow, in the depths of
winter a religious revival has begun sweeping the Confederate army on the
Rappahannock.
General Joseph Hooker reorganizes the Army of The Potomac
into eight Corps---the non-consecutively numbered First, Second, Third, Fifth,
Sixth, Ninth, Eleventh, Twelfth and Cavalry. It is the first time that Cavalry
becomes a separate unit. Artillery is no longer its own Corps. Hooker also
introduces an innovation which every army still uses---unit insignia.
