SEPTEMBER 28, 1861:
Munson’s
Hill, Virginia has been a deathtrap for Union troops as well-concealed
Confederate sharpshooters pick off men at Bailey’s Crossroads in the shadow of
the hill. General McClellan has hesitated to attack the hill because of its
fearsome cannons which are clearly visible on the hilltop. Union troops finally assaulted the hill and find it deserted, except for
several logs painted to look like cannons. The “Quaker Gun Incident” makes
headlines around the world to the humiliation of everyone but McClellan who
praises his troops for taking the hill.
