October 10, 1861---Controlling the Cumberland Gap

OCTOBER 10, 1861:   

In accordance with President Lincoln’s orders of October 1^st, General William T. Sherman is developing a plan which, if successful, will give control of the Cumberland Gap to the Union and allow the Union direct access to the East Tennessee Unionists.
