September 24, 1861---A fifth of Old Flintlock
SEPTEMBER 24, 1861:
Army
chaplains report that liquor consumption is rampant among both officers and men
in the Union army. Troopers are even using their gun barrels to store hootch! A
call is put out for Temperance workers.
