September 22, 1861---Better-quality bacon
SEPTEMBER 22, 1861:
The Richmond, Virginia newspapers quote rising prices due
to the Union blockade. Better quality bacon is 34¢ a pound; flour ranges from
four to over seven dollars per pound for best quality. Leather is unavailable.
