OCTOBER 18, 1861:
General
Thomas West “Tim” Sherman is a long time Army regular who started his career by
walking 400 miles to Washington D.C. to ask President Andrew Jackson for an
appointment to West Point. Assigned to lead an amphibious assault on Port
Royal, South Carolina, Sherman repeatedly requests divisions to make the
attack. All his requests are met by the same response from General George B.
McClellan: ‘Sorry, I can’t spare a single one.’ The dispute becomes so bitter
that Abraham Lincoln himself has to resolve it. Sherman gets his troops.
