October 15, 1861---Going rogue

OCTOBER 15, 1861:

Merriwether Jeff Thompson, a failed applicant to West Point, the Virginia Military Institute, and to Missouri Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson’s Missouri Guards, promotes himself to General and takes his Partisan Rangers freelance, burning the Big River Bridge, near Potosi, Missouri. Thompson would become known as the “Swamp Fox of the Confederacy.”
