SEPTEMBER 10, 1861:       

The Battle of Carnifax Ferry. A small engagement at Carnifax Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) drives Confederate forces back. The battle is noteworthy inn that future Presidents Major Rutherford B. Hayes and Private William McKinley both of the 23^rd Ohio were in combat here together.
