OCTOBER 20, 1861:
The Battle of Leesburg: J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry and Union
forces fight an engagement along the Leesburg Pike. Stuart withdraws; this is a
tactical victory for the Union but a strategic defeat, as after their
withdrawal Stuart’s force in in place to support the Confederate forces at
Ball’s Bluff. Leesburg was to change hands 150 times during the Civil War.
