Dorothea
Dix had been petitioning for months to be allowed to provide nursing services
to the Union Army. After promising to hire only older, homely women so soldiers
would not be tempted to sin, on this day 150 years ago she was authorized by
Secretary of War Simon Cameron to gather nurses. On this same day, the Confederate capital is moved from
Montgomery, Alabama to Richmond, Virginia.
