JUNE 16, 1861:
Under
increasing pressure from Union forces in western Virginia, Confederate General
Joseph Johnston’s men evacuate Harper’s Ferry, making Bunker Hill, Virginia
their new home. Confederate President Jefferson Davis excoriates Johnston for
abandoning the armory, and looks askance at every future decision the General
makes. Union forces move into position around Hagerstown and Williamsport,
Maryland.
