JUNE 26, 1861:   

 It is reported that 13 Union reconnaissance troops of Colonel Lew Wallace’s 11^th Indiana Zouaves kill 31 rebels in two vicious hand-to-hand engagements near Romney, Virginia. Universal skepticism meets Wallace’s report. Wallace would later become famous as the author of Ben Hur.
