MAY 23, 1861:
The
Virginia referendum on secession is held, and Virginia officially goes out of
the Union. The referendum is scarred by ballot-box stuffing, threats and
intimidation tactics against Unionists, and these irregularities are
acknowledged by both sides. The final tally is 132,201 to 37,451. Most of the
anti-secession votes that are counted come from the area that will eventually
become West Virginia.
