JUNE 22, 1861:
The Times of London war correspondent
William Howard Russell arrives in the United States to cover the American Civil
War. Russell, who reported on the Crimean War in 1854, is considered the father
of all war correspondents. He was paid the amazing sum of £1,200 a year and
expenses. He opposed slavery and supported the Union Army, but critiqued the
Union Army after the Battle of Bull Run. Forbidden to accompany troops any longer,
he returned to London in 1862.
