JUNE 27, 1861:
The
Springfield Model 1861 Rifle is introduced to the U.S. Army. Together with the
Minie Ball, a soft lead conical bullet, the use of the longer range, more
accurate Springfield will lead to devastating numbers of casualties in the war.
