May 22, 1861---Thornsberry Bailey Brown



MAY 22, 1861:   

 Private Thornsbury Bailey Brown (May 15, 1829 – May 22, 1861) becomes the first Union soldier killed in combat by a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. Brown was a member of a Virginia Unionist militia. He was killed by Private Daniel W.S. Knight, a member of a Virginia Confederate militia, at Fetterman, Virginia (now West Virginia).  Both men were from the same general vicinity of Taylor County, Virginia (now West Virginia). The two men may have known one another as civilians.
