June 21, 1861---Full of hot air...

JUNE 21, 1861:

Thaddeus S.C. Lowe, an “aeronaut” and friend of Joseph Henry, head of the Smithsonian, demonstrates for President Lincoln how his hot air balloon, ENTERPRISE, can be used for observation of enemy troop movements. Lincoln is so impressed he orders the immediate establishment of an Army Balloon Corps, the forerunner of the eventual U.S. Air Force.
