June 8, 1861---Tennessee holds a "vote" on secession

JUNE 8, 1861:

Already having passed an Ordinance of Secession and already having been admitted to the Confederacy, Tennessee’s referendum on secession is held, and voters choose 104,913 to 47,238. Most of the Unionist vote came from the eastern third of the State.

Also, on this day, the United States Sanitary Commission (USSC) is established to promote better and more healthful conditions in the military.
