MAY 15, 1861:
General-in-Chief
of the Army Winfield Scott, hero of the Mexican War and veteran of the War of
1812, is so concerned about General Benjamin Butler’s conduct in the occupation
of Baltimore that he relieves Butler at 2:17 AM, and reassigns him to Fortress
Monroe, Virginia, demanding first that he stop at Washington, DC to explain
himself.
